We left SGU on a Thursday, and traveled to SLC and then caught the flight out of there. We travel stand by, and let me tell you, it was a nightmare all the way. We rode the "bubble" both ways going and coming home. Riding the "bubble" is to say that we were the last two people who was to board the airplane.
The memorial for Cliff was done very good, and I'm sure that Cliff would have been pleased with the way that it was handled. They gave, anyone who wanted, a chance to speak, so I stood and said a few words about Cliff and me as we were buddies in the Navy, and served three years together, sharing an apartment on the beach, and serving on three different Submarines.
The Hoxsey family is so great, and they did such a great job with the service, that I cant say enough about their strength and unity.
Some strange parallel things about Cliff and myself is quite interesting. He was only 17 when I first met him, in Company 876 in the Navy Boot camp in San Diego, California, and then we were apart for a year as I attended Navy schools on the East Coast, and then was shipped to Hawaii where I went aboard the USS Queenfish SS393 Submarine. Cliff and Harold Newman were the first two to welcome me aboard, and we were friends from that time on.
Dot and I were married on April 6, 1956, and Cliff and Frankie were married on April 6, 1957. Strange as it may seem, I had three daughters, and Cliff had three daughters, I have 9 grand kids, and Cliff has 9 grandkids, I have three grandsons, and six grandaughters, and cliff has three grandsons, and six grandaughters I had a boat shop, and Cliff had a boat shop, I flew airplanes, and Cliff flew airplanes, I gained weight, and Cliff gained weight ;o) All kidding aside, I loved him as my "little brother" and I will miss him very much.

Information Re: My Grandpa Huntington

I was thinking the other day about an interview that I had several years ago concerning my Grandpa Huntington, my dads dad. I was talking to an old gentleman from Hurricane, and he told me this story.
" While I was working at Lees ferry, I remember your Grandpa Clark Allen, and as I was a young man, I was to take the skiff over the river and bring back people or things that needed to be transported across the Colorado River at the Lees ferry.
One day, we were hailed by a person leading a Donkey and said that he wanted to be ferried across the river. I went over there to get him, and as there wasn't room in the skiff to put the donkey, we tied it to the back of the boat and started to cross the river. The reason that I remember it so plain, is that as we started to cross the river, the donkey would swim, but then I guess that it found out that it didn't have to swim, and so it laid on its side and we pulled it across the river".
"As the evening progressed, I remember that we were to have supper, and ask the stranger to join us, and he accepted. As the supper progressed, he was asked what he was doing in the area, and his reply was that he wanted to find his father, and shoot a few of the old Mormons off the fence where they were setting and making their wives work the fields. When he was ask the name of his father, he told them that it was Clark Allen Huntington, and he was setting at the same table as his father".
I Talked with this old fellow for quite a while and found him to be quite a fun person to talk to, and he also added that when he told them of his fathers name, that Clark Allen was shocked to see his son after so many years, but had not recognized him until that time.
The rest of the story about Grandpa A W (Dimick) Huntington is included in the family history as written by my wonderful sister Beth, without her, a lot of the history of our family would not be known. I doubt that I have ever told her about this story of talking with a person who was at the Ferry at the time that Grandpa Dimick and Great Grandpa Clark Allen met at Lees Ferry.
I thought it necessary to include this story in a blog for everyone to see and copy for it is an interview with an eye witness to the event.
Keep in touch and keep the blogs coming....................Lonehawk

caught a little fox, put it in a box

Well, I finally caught another fox, it was a tough task, as the little devils are so smart and dumb at the same time. I kept baiting the trap with all kinds of goodies, and finally the small one took the bate. there is another one out there, but I think it is the mother one, and is a little more cautious than the smaller ones.
One of my little lambs was stepped on by one of the bigger animals, and broke its hind leg just below the knee. I think that it will heal, as the lamb is so young and growing quite fast. I thought about putting a wrap bandage on the leg, but it is growing so fast, I think that it might cut off the circulation and do more harm than good.
We had tickets to go to the wave again today, but the weather has been so wet that they canceled us out, and will reschedule us at some later date. (I hope).
Things are sure starting to green up in this area, I have green grass growing in the pasture, and the trees are starting to bud out, so it wont be long before we have the hot weather to contend with.
I still have not been able to get the poles up due to the muddy area that they have to be placed, so I am still on 2 meters until then. I cant hardly wait to be able to get on the upper bands and see about DXing a bit more. We have a network here that stretches from Las Vegas to north of CDC,and is tied into several transmitters, neat and works real good.
I was talking to another ham, and found out the band used for the Haiti disaster is 14.300 just to listen only, but it has been quite busy and they don't want any transmissions unless ask for.
The above paragraph if for Lloyd and was quite dull for the rest of you, sorry.......
I was watching the TV, and they said that the so. Utah has about 230%of our regular moisture, I bet that it will make the old Sevier river go to food stage this spring, hope it don't take the bridge out like it has in the past.
Classic Country has been real busy this past month, we have played for 13 gigs, and have one more to play for, don't mind it too much as long as I get paid for having fun.....
Have been working on my old tractor, and have it running great, and the power steering works wonders, and now I am working on the hydraulics to see if I can stop the oil leakage and get more lifting power, will let ya all know.
Hey, Keep in touch and keep the blogs coming, Love them............Love to all........Lonehawk

End of January

I have trapped this fox today here in my back yard, it is a bit ticked off, but it will make a great mounted fox as soon as I can get it to Jessie and Rob in SLC, he is a taxidermist, and will skin it and mount it. I have another one that I am hoping to trap in the next few days. These little devil's are so tricky, it took a long time and some real deep thinking on how to trap them and keep them in the trap. Seems as tho, they would go into the trap and then they would get out some way, so I devised a method of not allowing them to open the trap door.
Things are starting to green up here in Dixie, we have had so much rain the past week to ten days, and more is expected in the coming week, we sure needed this moisture.
We are getting ready to take Tinas times of ones life, so, as I reflect on the Christmases past, I remember that the Ward in Hatch would practice the Handles Messiah cantata and we would rehearse it for a good month before Christmas just to make sure that we got our parts right.
We would sing it in Hatch, then Alton, then in Orderville, then Glendale, and then go over to Tropic and sing then to Panguitch and do the same thing over again. I remember what satisfaction that I got when we were performing and then at the end what a good feeling that we all got as the people would gather around and talk to us about our dedication.
It seems as tho every Christmas, there would be snow on the ground, and I remember the first Christmas that we didn't have snow, and it seemed so strange that there wasn't any snow for the Christmas season. I do remember that one Christmas night that there wasn't any snow, and when we woke up in the morning there was about two feet of new snow.
I never had enough money to buy a pair of skies, so I made my own. I remember researching the information and then making my own skies. It was quite a trick to plane down the end of the board, and then to soak it and make the bend in the skies. Didn't have bindings, so make a strap over the shoes, and a small wooden strip under the heal of the shoe so that the shoe would stay in the strap. Wasn't the best in the world, but I had a blast making it and another blast going down the slope at Big Hill.
We boys in town would all go to the east side of the river and skate on the frozen Meadows there, you could skate for a couple of miles down the river area and sometimes you could even skate on the river its self, but that was always a bit scary in that one never knew how thin the ice was on the river. I was skating onetime, and thought that I could make it to the bank over some thin Ice, and broke Thur and had to take my clothes off and ring them out and then wear wet clothes all the way home, sure remember how cold it was, but didn't even get the sniffles from it.
I have written about my most memorable Christmas before, so I wont go there, but I will tell you all about another one. It was about 1948 when we had a very bad winter, and the snow was really deep and no one could go anywhere with their cars, except Dad. He had an old Model A pickup and he would take some coals out of the heater in the house, and put them under the engine, and after a while, he would go out and the old truck would start every time. Then he would go to Sam Riggs and start his tractor by pulling it, and then they would go around town starting all the others that wanted their cars started. I remember that he would get his sleigh bells and go around the town about 10 or 11 at night and ring the bells and then sneak off without anyone seeing him, it was a special time, and I have wondered where his old sleigh bells are now, I haven't seen or heard them for years.
When I was growing up, my bedroom was where the New bathroom is now, and the eves of the house were now finished, and my bed had a tarpaulin over it to keep the snow off the bed, and I would sleep there snug and warm (too many quilts to even turn over) but I was warm and those several years, I never even had a cold all year, now with all the warm homes, we are always having colds and sniffles.
Well, enough of reminiscing about the cold and snowy times in Hatch, so I want to wish you all a very merry Christmas, and a delightful New Year.........Keep in touch and keep the blogs coming.............Lonehawk

Update no. 3

I talked with Ileta today, and Pat isn't doing very good, so here is the latest from her:

Due to his esophagus being worked on, he is being fed intravenous, and he has tubes for drains from his left kidney area, and from his right kidney where they removed the sists, and he has a tube down his throat so he can breathe.

Well, he had a clot hit his heart, and they had a code blue on him for a while, rushed him to the ER and restated his heart. Then he is comatose, but managed to pull the breathing tube from his throat, and almost suffocated because he couldn't breathe, on top of this, he has pneumonia and isn't in very good shape. He also is running a high fever, and they are only giving a 50/50 on him right now, but the Dr. said that he is a fighter, and they think that he will pull thru.
More problems also, his blood pressure is very low, and they are trying to bring that up to help with all the other things. His only kidney isn't working very well, so they are going to put him on dialysis to see if that might help him recover some of the other problems.

Ileta said that they are moving into the "half way house" and the cost will be only $25.00 per day, and that will help a lot on the expenses. Melody is here with her, and that is good for her right now.

Please keep Pat and his family in your prayers, as of right now that is about all we can do......
Keep in touch and I will try to keep you up on what is happening as soon as I get the word....
Sending love and all that stuff.......................Lonehawk

Update on Pat Dix

Just talked with Ileta today at 2:00pm, and this is the latest update on pat:

As of the last blog, you were all informed that he has had to have his left kidney removed as it was cancerous, and full of sists, and was about the size of a football. They had to remove the urethra on the left side. Then the Dr. had to remove part of his esophagus as it hooks onto the stomach, and then they had to lift the stomach up and re-attach the esophagus to the stomach. Pats right kidney had several sists on it, and they drained them and put a tube in to drain off the sists area. The Dr. told Ileta that he would check him in another year and do some work on the urethia on the left kidney area and maybe have to cauterize it ?????
The Dr. has Pat so drugged up right now, that he don't know anyone, except Ileta said she took hold of his hand and he squeezed it and said hi honey, so he is close to awake, but is too drugged up to have visitors. Ileta told me to stay away for a few days until he can be down dosed and can recognize anyone, which is a good idea, and besides we don't want him to catch a cold right now, as it would go to Pneumonia and would probably kill him.
Well, that is the latest from here in Dixie. I wish i could send you all some pomegranates, as I have a bumper crop this year, and we have no more room to store them, so I am sending a big box to Panguitch with Robie when she goes back up next week, might want to contact her......
Until I hear more details, keep in touch and I send love and all that stuff to you all..........Lonehawk

Pat Dix

I sent most of you an e-mail, but didn't have the address for everyone, so decided to send a blog.
Pat had his operation today, and had to have his left kidney removed as it was cancerous, and about the size of a football. The Dr. also removed some of his esophagus that connects to the stomach. I talked with Ileta for a while, and I wont be able to go to see him for some time as everyone is afraid of the PIG FLU. Swine flu sounds too dignified for the beast.
When I get more info, I will try to let you all know what is going on, until then, sending love and all that stuff......................Lonehawk

My mission call 1951

inklings e-mailed me and wanted me to post my mission call information on the blog, so here goes.
I was called to serve in the South-West Indian mission which is headquartered in Gallup, NM. I then went Thur the temple and got my endowments and then reported to the mission home in SLC in January 1951. I was in the mission Home for two weeks learning the things that was necessary to fill the mission, but just two days before we were to be set apart as missionaries, the Panguitch Draft board decided that they would not let any missionaries go from that part of the state. We made a trip from SLC to Panguitch( we being Kurt Moore and myself) and met with the board, and they were so set in the decision that they refused any information that we presented, even tho we were in the mission home for two weeks, they just said NO !
It was interesting on the things that I was to take with me, there was a metal suitcase, walking boots, canteen, back pack, levies, and things like that, which meant that I would be serving on the reservation among the Indians, felt bad, but not able to fill the calling.
One interesting thing happened several years later, after I went into the Navy, and returned home, married, and was working in SLC. Your dad used to come to conference and stay with us, and we would go to the Priesthood session on Saturday night. One time, we were standing in line and your dad said, "I want you to meet a friend of mine from NM." so he introduced me, and the man (a very large man weighing about 250) dressed in a western suit, said,"Huntington?, have you ever been to Texas, I said no, and then he said "have you been on a mission"?, I told him that I had been called to the South West Indian mission, and that I wasn't able to fill it due to the Draft board refusing me permission. He grabbed my hand again and said "I knew that name, as I would have been your mission President, and I had your name on the list of new missionaries, and you never shewed up, and I have wondered all this time what had happened to you", then he gave me a big hugggg and said that he was so happy to see that I still had a testimony and was attending the conferences as I should. I don't remember the mans name, but I will never forget the experience.
Hope this gave each of you some insight as to what happened, and thanks Inklings for the kick in the pants to get this written........Keep in touch and sending love and blessings to all......Lonehawk

It has been a month

I just checked the blog listing, and it has been a month since I wrote a blog.
This past month has gone by so fast, that I can hardly believe it, with all the gigs playing, and fixing the apartments, I just haven't taken the time to say anything.
I was able to go to the Evans reunion for one day, and it was pretty good to see most of the people who I haven't seen for several years, some of them, I don't care if I see them again for some time...oops, that is being catty...but some of them tick me off, and I guess I might thick them off also, so everything seems to equal out.
The foursome of us that play for the assisted living people, just picked up another one to play for, that makes three we play for during the month, and with all the other gigs, we are busy. This month, we have played for 12 gigs, and that is a lot of music, but we love it...Frank, plays guitar and does most of the singing, and his wife Sue, and Dorothy and I make up the foursome, and we have a blast doing it.
One of the party's that the Classic Country played for was the Sheriff party, and Elizabeth Smarts father was there as the guest speaker. He is really a great guy, and is trying real hard to cope with the abduction of his daughter and the upcoming trial of the creep that did the dirty deed.
The last few days, there has been over 10,000 more people in town for the marathon race, and the traffic has been horrible, and this next week the Senior games will start, and another 10,000 or more people will be in town for that one also, so I wont be going to town much the next week.
Classic Country has been ask to play for the Square dancers, and the Cowboy shooters so that is a neat gig for us.
The weather here has been windy, and overcast, but no rain. There has been a lot of rain to the north of us, but we don't get any, things are so dry, and the wind is howling about 50 mph today, and the tumble weeds are blowing all over the place. Right now, I feel like I have been smoking for a life time. The air is so full of smoke that I cant even see the hills past Washington. This morning, at sunrise, the sun was just a big ball of red...real pretty to look at, but not so nice to see all the smoke.
The California fire is pumping a lot of smoke this way, and with the fire going between here and Cedar City, it puts quite a bit of crud into the air.

Twist, I just put up one of the three antennas, the 2 meeter one, and now working on the one for 10 to 80 M., hope to have them all up and working in a few days, but with all the heat and bad air, I don't work too long on them in the mornings.

I need new glasses, so I went shopping around this morning, and was flabbergasted on the price that glasses are now. Just two years ago, they were only half as much as they are now, so I went to costco, and used my old frames, and got a new pair for about half what Sears and others wanted.

I planted some tomatoes this spring, and had real nice bushes, but the tomatoes are so small that I think that they have cross pollinated with Cherry tomatoes. They were supposed to be nice and big tomatoes, but they are about the size of an egg, got any suggestions?

Are any of you going to the Evans Reunion this year? I wanted to go out this year, but I have so many gigs that I wont be able to go. We haven't been there for several years, and I want to go now, as we wont have some of those good people very much longer, oh well, I guess we all have to go some time, but I just don't want to hurry things along..........ugh.....

Twist, have you ever done any work on Echo-link? We have several people who check in every Sunday night on the link, and some are in Colorado, Wyoming,Florida, and even Alaska. I don't have a computer next to my radios, as that is one of the essential ingredients required for the link, but I plan on getting one installed ASAP when the antennas are up.

Keep in touch and keep the blogs coming, I read them all the time, and love them, the only way I can keep in touch with all the happenings......why don't you let me in on your chat??????? Don't know how to do it, but would learn..............Sending love and blessings.........Lonehawk

Cowboy days

Yesterday, the Classic Country played a gig in Kanab at the Cowboy Days, very successful and we had a real good crowd. The dancers loved us, and we were ask if we were interested in playing again next year, of course we accepted the invitation, and the $$$ isn't bad either.
There was several people there that were participants in the activities, some were Cowboy Poets, and are quite famous in that area, and some were people who had acted in the movies that have been produced in Kanab area over the past several years, anyway, quite an interesting bunch of people. We had a blast playing for them, and made several good contacts with other bands that were there for the event. One band was called Western Underground, who was Chris La Due (sp) old band, but he passed away some time ago, and his band still plays all of his old tunes, quite a bunch of pretty good guys.

We finally got all the apartments finished and are ready to rent, it sure has been a long spell without any money coming in from them.....we had four that have been vacant for several months, and having to remodel and fix them up to get them ready to rent again.

The temperature here in SGU is still hot, around 108 F and is so dry that the country would burn up if we had a fire. There are several fires going on around here, and in California, and the air is fulled with crud all the time. My eyes feel like they are full of sand, and itch all the time, sure would be great if we could get a good storm, but it seems as thou every storm that looks promising seems to go around and to the North, and don't drop any moisture here in SGU.

Keep in touch, and keep the blogs coming...sending love and blessings to all.......Lonehawk

cost, cost, cost

I think that the new stimulus package is a flat outlandish piece of garbage.....after saying that, we are in a real tight spot now days, we have half of our rentals not occupied, and the cost of doing some work on them to bring them back into very good condition is staggering. We are putting dead bolt locks on all the apartment's that don't now have them, and also are putting a new counter top on one of the apartment that had a hole burned in the top by someone ironing clothes on the counter top and leaving an iron on it and burned the hole, so a new top...and another apartment needs a new vinal floor in the bathroom, and so it goes with rentals..........ouch !
The past couple of weeks have been a busy time, with several gigs playing music, and going to SLC for the wedding, and trying to ketch up on the things that need attending here.
After the wedding, we loaded the Peacocks in the truck and brought them here, and I put them in an enclosure that I used for my sheep, except they got out and are now roaming around the pasture area as if they owned it. It was Marks birthday, and I was able to do the work for him, and it felt soooooogood all the time that the session was being conducted. What a thrill to have three of my family do this at the same time......WOW !
Andee will be married on the 7th and she is marrying a very nice young man that she has known since High School, and is studying to become a Doctor.
I had to fly home last night, as I have a band gig tonight at the Elks, and then I will fly back to SLC, tomorrow morning and then be there for the wedding on Friday, then do the ring ceremony that afternoon, the next day, Saturday morning we are to bless Jessies baby Ruger at 10am, then fly back to SGU, as I have another gig Saturday on the Kolob mountain, then I will fly back to SLC Sunday and drive home with Dot on Sunday. When we got there, we got bumped due to a mix up at SLC and so we spent the night in Atlanta. On deplaning, Dot lost her purse, with all the money, credit cards, and everything else, but I had a card and was able to charge the room. The next day, we got on the AC and got first class all the way to Ireland, what a great ride and the food was out of this world, steak as tender that it could be cut with a fork.
We arrived in Dublin and waited for Barb to pick us up the airport, but she was a LITTLE late, but finally got us to the Hotel.
For the next five days or so, we traveled the length and breathe of Ireland and seen sooooooo many fantastic things that it would take me several pages to just briefly tell about it, but we took over 2000 pictures between Dot and I.
One neat thing that we did was kiss the Blarney stone, and visit the Huntington Castle. I was surprised to learn that the Huntington castle has been occupied by the decedents of the original Huntington since 1620 the year the castle was built. The last Huntington to be living there just died about 30 days ago, and they were still fixing and cleaning the place up. I can say that the castle was not the most up kept castle, but the grounds were the best we seen.
We departed Dublin and was lucky to get first class on the flight back to the states, and Atlanta again. We got bumped three times before we finally got the last tickets on a flight to SLC, actually, they removed several buddy passes people (the lowest on standby) and let us on, as we had a higher priority than they did.
Got back in SGU on Tuesday afternoon, with the Jet lag, and I had to play a gig at the Elks the next night, and it was sleeeeepy time trying to stay awake to finish the gig.
Whenever you are here, stop in and we will show you loooooots of pictures of the trip.
Keep in touch and sending love and blessings to all..........................Lonehawk

what a busy May

Today just happens to be the last day of May, and what a busy month it has been. First, the mission call has taken a lot of time that needed to be spent elsewhere, but working for the lord don't pay much, but you cant beat the retirement program.
This month, the Band that I play in has had 10 (count them) ten gigs and two that we played for the rest homes and assisted living, but what a hoot to play for them, and it is so rewarding when you see some that cant walk or even lift there head but will tap their foot to the tempo or mouth the words of the song, it makes you feel so good just to give them a little bit of enjoyment. Its sure funny, that sometimes we think that they don't know what is going on around them, but when music starts, it seems to get Thur the fog, sure is gratifying...
I have started to take a class in getting my General Radio license. This will allow me to get on frequencies that will get me farther from my own radio shack, and will also allow me to reach other people in other countries, will take the test the third Wednesday in June, wish me luck...
We had a very sad happening here at the apartments, a man that has rented from us for the past six years, just committed suicide. The police come and ask me to get them a key for the door, and that they needed to check on his welfare, so I got the key and was going to let them in, but they wouldn't let me do it, and made me wait in the parking lot. They said that he was very clean, as he didn't make a mess, and that he overdosed on pills. They just finished clearing out the furniture and other belongings, so we have been cleaning up and readying it for new carpet, its only been just a bit over 20 years since the carpet was laid in that apartment.
Just think, it is only a few more days and we leave for Ireland, I don't know if I am excited, or not about the trip, but I'm sure that it will be a great adventure. When we get back, I will only have 14 days left on my mission. I don't know if I am happy about it, or if I feel a bit let down by not helping more people try to find employment, and I mean TRY, there just isn't any jobs to be had in St. George, or around anywhere. Just a few months ago, we could come up with 350 to 400 jobs, and now we are lucky if we have 35 to 40 jobs listed. Sure glad I am not in the market for a new job....
Yesterday, I got to working in my garden, and put in 13 new bubblier watering stations for my tomato plants, I hope we get some good tomatoes this year, last year was not very good for the tomato harvest.
Love yer blogs, so keep them coming....Keep in touch and sending love to all..........Lonehawk

Trip to the WAVE

Dot just completed putting a few of the pictures that we took on our trip to the WAVE, so you can click on digitalgrannie and look at some of the most awesome real estate in the entire world. We, together, took about 300 pictures, and these are just some of the ones that we thought would spur your interest in the great, wonderful, and awesome country here in the Great state of Utah.
The BLM only allows 20 people a day to go to the WAVE, and it is decided by lottery, on the first day of each month, at 12 noon they have a few minutes of time that you can call in and put your name in the hat for a draw out. If you are lucky, then you can get 6 tickets to the WAVE, on a certain day. The phone calls cost $5 and you don't get this back, and then if you draw out, the tickets are about $50 more, so it isn't cheap to even try to get the tickets, but it is worth every penny (if you draw out) to go there and see it for yourself, because there isn't any words in the English language that can fully describe the beauty of that place.
Just a short note for this time, but sending love and blessings to all..............Lonehawk

pictures of the WAVE

Dot just listed a bunch of pictures of the WAVE on her blog YouTube, check it out and see the fantastic country that is there and around the site.
I think the pix , about the last couple, is the prettiest ones. If you haven't ever seen or heard of the wave, then Dot will be posting some pictures of the area, just as soon as she determines which of about 300 photos that we took, would be the right ones to post.
We left St. George at 5:30 AM and drove about 175 miles toward Page ,Arizona and then left the highway and drove 8 miles on the worst dirt road that I have been on in a long time.
When we were getting ready to leave, Dot was worried about the weather, as there was lots of clouds and forecast of heavy rain, and that is one place I would not want to be if it was going to rain.
When we were all in the truck, I offered a word of prayer, and ask that we would have a successful and safe trip. We drove all the way there without getting in any rain, and we drove Thur areas where it had just rained, but we never got wet. When we parked at the designated parking area, the clouds had just started to break up. It was a little cool, so we all wore jackets, and started the hike.
All the way ( three miles of walking) it was cool and just perfect for walking, and when we finally got to the area of the Wave, the Sun was just perfect for taking pictures, except the wind was blowing about 90 to 100 mph, no kidding, we had to turn our backs to the wind, and brace ourselves to keep from being blown over.
On the return hike out of the area, we passed several people walking in and the clouds were all just scattered and the sky was sooooo blue that it was breathtaking.
When we got back to the truck, Dot talked to one of the rangers there (giving parking tickets) to the people who didn't have the proper parking tickets for that area, and he told her that he had just received a weather warning of severe shower conditions that was on the way there, but we drove out and all the way back to home without any rain at all. See, the lord does listen to requests (sometimes) and we are so grateful for such a successful and beautiful trip.
When Dot gets everything sorted out, I will let all of you know so that you can see the most amazing piece of real estate in the world............
Hope everything is going great for all of you, .....We are preparing for our trip to Ireland in June, and I am getting a bit excited about the trip...........
Keep in touch and am sending love and blessings to all....................Lonehawk

Mountain Man Rondezvou and other things

This last weekend was the annual rendezvous here in Southern Utah, and it was VERY WELL ATTENDED, I think this was the largest Rondy that we have ever had here. Stick, you are lucky that you didn't come down, as it started out with a real bad wind, then it became very dusty, then it started to rain MUD, and then it began to hail, and THEN, IT SNOWED, flakes as large as quarters, THEN, it turned off real cold. About Midnight, or so, I had had it and went to the truck and started the engine and turned on the heater and stayed in the truck the rest of the night. Bridger slept thru the whole thing as he said, I was warm all night. I think he must be related to an Eskimo.
Bridger did real good in his competition, and won the flint and steel fire starting with a 19.6 seconds from start to flame, way to go Bridger ! ! !
I didn't take the trailer this time, to my regret, I took my single pole tepee tent, and tryed to sleep there, and the rest is history.
I have some sheep and the buck keeps getting out of the fence line, and I was able to find one of the trails that he used, and blocked it off, then the last couple of days, he has just jumped the fence, and I go chase him back in, and he just goes to the fence and jumps over. Today, he jumped over, but caught his front foot in the fence, and I had to cut the wire to let him out, and then an hour later, he just jumped over the fence again, I don't know what I am going to do with the dumb sucker, I would make roast out of him if I didn't need him for breeding.
We have an apartment over our garage, and we have a door into our house from the apartment, but we lost the key, and we checked on having a lock smith come out and make us another one, and he wanted $50 just to come out, and $20 to make the key. I had bought a lock smith set of lock picks, so I got them and worked about 5 minutes, and, you guessed it, I PICKED the crazy lock. I was so surprised that I actually picked the lock. Dorothy took the lock to the smith, and he will only charge $20 to make a new key.....YEA...!
I bought a big van, like the ones that UPS and FEDX uses, and am finally getting it ready to license. Stick, bet you cant guess what the license will be.................Yep, LONEHWK....kind of grabs ya huh ? Going to convert it into a Mountain Man and a Radio Van, think that would work our very well in case of a disaster, it would have all the equipment for CERT, and the ham radio gear for the emergency communication....what do you think of that one Twist? I also have completed the CERT program, and the citizen police program, so I believe that I could be an asset in any emergency, don't you think so? By the way, I recommend that all of you should take the CERT program, just to let you know what to do in case of HAVE TO...right Twist.....! !
Keep in touch and keep the blogs coming, as this way I can keep up on all the things going on in the family..........sending love and Gods blessings to all.................Lonehawk

Are we Cherokee #2

To answer Nene, this would have been Grandpa Evans' great grandpa. I don't know what his name was, but that would make Grandpa Evans 1/8th Cherokee, and then my mom a 1/16th, and then me as 1/32nd. We were standing together and he said,"hey, look at that guy over your right shoulder, it looks like the picture of your Grandpa", when I looked around, it was a spitting image of Grandpa Evans, and Cliff said,"I'll never doubt you again about your Indian blood."
Love your blogs, so keep them coming.......sending love and God bless.............Lonehawk

Are we Cherokee?

In answer to that question, I want to tell you about my quest for this knowledge...
I have always been told that we have Cherokee blood but the family disavowed this for many years, but if you look at some of the Evans girls, you will see the black course hair and the high cheek bones of the Indian features.
When I was back in North Carolina, where the Cherokee Nation is located, we attended the pageant of The trail of tears that they tell the story of the exit of the Cherokee people from their to Oklahoma.
While there, I went to the information counter and ask the lady if they had any records of any Indian women marrying white people, she ask what the name was, and I told her Evans. She went to this BIG BOOK, about 3 foot square, and 4 or 5 inches thick, then put on a pair of cotton gloves and turned to that section in the book and said that there was a Cherokee woman that married a man by the name of Evans, her name (I think she said it was) Sara and she had a girl by the same name, and a son but didn't have a name for the son. I then told her that I thought that the son would have been my Great-great-great Grandfather and that it would make me about a 32 second Cherokee, at which she said that was not so, and I said yes that would make me about a 32 second, then she said that they have a belief in the Cherokee nation, that if you have any Cherokee blood, then you are CHEROKEE...... I laughed at this time, and said in that case, can I have a membership card to the Cherokee nation, and then she and both laughed...
I don't know if this connection is the one what we are looking for, but it was good enough evidence for me at that time and even now....you choose.......
Keep the blogs going, I love them and try to read them every day.............Love to all and God bless..........................Lonehawk

Easter

Inklings, I read your blog and then started to think about what you had written, and reflected on what the Easter time really represents. You are sooooo right about what used to be and what is now with the attendance of people at the churches around the country. I attribute this to the way the Government has outlawed God and Jesus from all the public buildings and schools, no wonder that the children alive now don't recognize and worship God the way we used to do, only a few years ago.
I can recall a year about 1938, or 39 that they used to have the Passion Play at Zions canyon just out side of Springdale and Grandpa Evans had a big truck with a flat bed and rack on it. We would all get a blanket and we would travel to Zions just to see the Play. This play still sticks in my mind every time that I pass the place in Zions that the play was held. Funny, how something like that will stick in a child's mind when it is portrayed so life like and with such feeling and love for what Jesus did for us.
On the way home, I remember talking with mom and dad, and them asking me what I thought of the play, and I remember asking them "Why did Jesus have to die like that?", and then listening to what mom and dad told me about the reasons that he had to die that way for all mankind. These statements still are in my mind after so many years and tears ago.....
We have Barb and her family with us today, and are so pleased that they would fly down and spend a weekend with us. The kids are growing up so fast, and such great kids. Andee will be getting married in Aug. and the other two are such great students and try so hard to do what is right. Barb and the two youngest had a few days off from school, so they jumped on an airplane and flew to Maui for a couple of days. All of Barbs kids are world travelers, going every where with their mom, and thus have bonded so close and kind.
Keep in touch, and keep the blogs coming, I read them every morning, and love them....Sending love and Gods blessings to all....................Lonehawk

Trip to Florida

In the middle of March, Dot and I left here and traveled to SLC by car, and there bordered a plane to (intended) for West Palm Beach Florida. The reason for this trip was to attend a Submarine reunion with my old ship mates, and to celebrate our Captains 90th birthday.
We didn't have much of a problem getting out of SLC, and to Cincinnati, but because it was Spring Brake, all the flights were over sold and thus backed up every other flight going to Florida.
We finally made it to the reunion after renting a car and driving across the state of Florida, from the west coast to the east.
The reunion was a VERY GREAT success, and was put on by (my little brother and his family) I call him my little brother, as he was only 17 when we first met in Boot camp. It is strange that after boot camp, we separated and I went to Navy schools on the East coast, and after a year, I reported aboard the Submarine USS Queenfish SS393 in Pearl Harbor, and the first person to welcome me aboard was Cliff, and another young man Newman. I served with Cliff for the next three years and when we got out of the Navy, I lost track of him for the next 45 years.
To make a long story shorter, I was able to make contact with him and since that time, we have had the Ships reunion.......It wasn't until about 4 or 5 years ago, that I was looking at the picture of the Company that I was in at Boot camp, and noticed that Cliff had been in the same company as I was....We laugh a lot about these missed years.
To get back to the Reunion, it was so VERY GREAT, that I could fill several pages with the details, but that is another story.
When we decided to return home, we had several delays that required us to sleep in the airport at Atlanta one night, and then we finally arrived in SLC very tired.
AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, THEY CAN HAVE THE STATE OF FLORIDA........
One fun thing that we did, was to go to the Everglades and took a ride on the Air Boats there, and we seen several alligators, and the ride was very smooth and lots of fun, it was a bit expensive, but worth the time and money.
Keep in touch and have a wonderful time....sending love and blessings to all........Lonehawk

check out the blog by the Belyeabunch

Digitalgrannie and the belyeabunch have posted some real neat vidios on you tube you should check them out.
Been busy with the Mission and doing all the other stuff around the place, and will sure be glad when I "Keetch" up, and then maybe I will be able to go fishing in the back yard ponds and MAYBE, "Keetch" that big one that was put back in........Yes, twist and stick you can come and fish also, and you can bring your whole crew if you so desire, im sure that we could finc some place to hang you up or the night...:0) lol....we have a couple of trailers, and some cussions that you could throw on the floor and we can also cook up some mutton or something, so come on down.........................
digital grannie has posted some pixes of my latest toy (tool) that sure makes things lots easier than a shovel and wheelborrow, check it out............
We are getting ready to go to Florida on the 13th of March, and will be gone for about a week or so, then back to SLC to see the kids from Iowa, then back to SGU for music at the Elks, then who knows from there......
Nene< we are thinking of going to Ireland in June and wondering if that would be a good time to see the things around that part of the world??????, we need a lot of info, on where to go and what to see.....The bellyeabunch will be planning the places to stay and how to get around, but it would be nice if we had some first hand knowledable people to keep us out of mischief, so would like some input if you would be so kind. They told me that they could give me Cartazone shots, but I would have to go off the blood thinners before they would do it, and that I would have to have 12 shots of Lovanox in the stomach, and the insurance wont pay for that :(, oh well, cant have everything. Talked with my cardalogest and he advised me against having this procedure done, as it was too risky...the danger was blood clots and stroke and maybe death, so decided not to have anything done now..............:(
The band Classic Country is busy playing for dances, we played 12 in Dec., 12 in Jan., and so far, we have played 7 this month, with 3 more scheduled. Grandma was the first, and told of them living out on the East side of Hatch and that Grandpa had a nice farm and had just completed building a barb wire fence, and had horses and cattle all fenced in and things were looking real good.
One day, it had been raining real hard up on the mountain just east of where they were living, and (Proctor Canyon) they had just been called in by Grandma to have dinner.
Grandpa said that it was funny that the rain had been real bad on the mountain but nothing had been running down the wash just south of their house. As they began to eat, Grandpa suddenly jumped up and told the boys to hurry out and cut the fence and let the horses and cattle out, and then told the family to hurry and run to the hill just south of the house. He said that he got the insperation or thought that the canyon had been damed off by a mud slide or something else, and the water was backed up and would soon break the dam and flood the area. He said that no sooner than he had dispatched the boys to cut the wire, they noticed the mouth of the canyon started to slide out into the flat land, and water started to pour into the wash south of the home, the whole family started to run to the hill south of the home, and they had to jump the wash that was there, and now was running with water. Grandma said that each step that she took was a real tussel, as she was carying aunt Gai, and each step the mud would cling to her shoes, and so she gave the baby to Mom and then she said she jumped across the wash, only to land in the middle of it and was washed round and round down the wash, finally getting out, but in the mean time, she dropped the baby quilt, and they thought that the baby was being washed away, so one of the kids jumped in the wash and got the quilt.
Grandma said that they would climb a few feet up the hill, and the water would rise up, and they would climb a few feet further. Finally, they were out of the water, and turned around and watched the flood take there home and cover it up and wash it away.
Some time, I am going to try to get the tape of Grandpa and Grandma and put it on a CD so that you all can enjoy listening to what they said in thier own voice.
They never was able to fine anything of the house or any of their belongings but were so thankful that they all surveved........
Keep in touch and I send love and blessings to all.....................Lonehawk

Peterfied bones on East side of Hatch

I have the pix of the mountains on the East side of Hatch and as I was looking at it, I remember when I found pretrefied bones there. I was out hiking like always, and climbed up the mountain and thru a cut in some purplish colored looking rocks, and on top, I found this pretrefied bones of ?????, I packed several pieces in my back pack and took them home. I put them out in front of the front porch, and they were quite interesting, then one day, I noticed that some of them were missing, I ask mom if she knew where they went, and she didnt know, but a few days later, Lawn Fallis walked by, after turning the water into the ditch, and as he walked by, mom seen him reach down and put a few of them into his pocket. He was selling rocks down at his home, which was down on the main road, and I guess he figured that this was an easy few dollars.
Several years later, I took dad and my second daughter E. out there and showed them where I had picked up the bones. E. was only aabout six years old, but she still remembers the ride out there in Grandpas old pickup.
I have always liked to hike in the mountains around Hatch, and as you look at the Pix that Delerious posted some time ago, you can make out the area that the bones are located....first, look into the center of the pix, and there is an area of red there, with some darker rocks just above that, and to the right, there is some grey cliffs, and just to the north of these cliffs, is where I found the bones.
I have hiked to the top of almost all the ledges on the east side, and one in particular, is the upside down ice-creaam cone that is out just north of wilson canyon. This hike was a little more strenious than the others, as the climb was almost at a 45 degree slope, and when I reached the top, it was a bit scary going back down, as there wasnt anything to get hold of going down, as there was going up.....
I think that the most spectacular place was on the ledge just north of wilson canyon, it is the big round ledge that faces south, from this point, you can see for many miles in every directon, it is worth the hike if anyone wants to venture that far.
The way that I got there was to go to the Di-tomishshious mine(dont know how to spell that one) and then head up to the top of the mountain, then continue going south until you come to the ledge. Be careful, as the limestone at that point isnt very stable, and you could slip and slide off if you get too close to the edge.
Keep in touch and have a fun day.........Love and blessings to all.........Lonehawk

learning to swim

Just thinking again of my youth, and thought of the first time that I swam by myself.
I always went where ever Uncle Buster went, and he would always tell my mom not to worry as long as I was with him, as he would take care of me.
This particular day, we went to the Clay banks swimming, (in the nude), and I was only about 5 years old, but had been swimming with Uncle Buster for a long time. This day, there was Uncle Buster, Tex Q, Keith W. and a bunch of other guys there, and I would get ahold of a piece of wood and float down thru the hole. I had done this quite a few times, and at the end of each trip down, I would let go of the board, and hold my breath until I could touch the sandy bottom. I was gaining confidence each trip, and all at once, Uncle Buster grabbed me and thru me into the top of the hole, and said " swim or drownd", and I remember going under the water, but having held my breath several times before, so, I just held my breath and let the current take me to the bottom of the hole and when I touched the sandy bottom, I stood up, and couldnt hardly wait to run up to the top of the swimming hole and try it again. I remember how proud that Uncle Buster was that I didnt freek out and not enjoy my freedom of swimming after that.

Another adventure with Uncle Buster was when we would take Grandpa Evans's horses and cows down to the river to water them, we did this every day during the winter months, as no water was in the ditch, so we would drive them there, and back again to the coral. This day, Tex Q and I was riding one horse, and Buster was riding the other one, and Tex said lets race to the road, and away we went, by the way, these horses were large work horses, and very powerful, so when we went running fast racing, they were also enjoying the fun, and all at once, a cow darted out in front of Tex and me, and we hit it going real fast ( for a work horse), and it thru us off the horse, and we lit in the snow drift, (lucky for me) as the big horse rolled over, and just kept coming toward me, and rolled over me crushing me into the snow bank, and after it rolled over me, it stood up and just stood there looking down at me as if to say," silly human, cant you get out of the way when someone my size is falling". I wasnt hurt, because of the depth of the snow, but I could have been killed or badly hurt if it woudl have been dry ground.
Its fun sometimes to think of the good and bad times of ones life, and the things that keep coming into my mind of these events.......Keep in touch and I send love and blessings to all.........Lonehawk

building the house at Hatch

I was just day dreaming this afternoon, and was thinking about the time that we built the home in Hatch.
We lived in a two room shack (the one that used to be south of K and R home, and it didnt have any insulation in the walls, so on cold winter nights, it would get mighty chilly in the bedroom. We, all six of us, slept in one room in two beds, mom and dad slept in one bed, and the four sisters and I slept in the other one, three at the top, and two of us at the botton. I can remember, during one winter, I think it was 1936, waking up and seeing frost hanging from the celing.
One day, dad hooked up the horse to the plow, and started to plow around the old root cellar and I can remember mom coming out and asking dad what he was doing, and he replied, that he was making a basememt for a new house.
Most of the work on the basement was done by a pick and shovel, and lots of labor, I can remember several guys coming up and helping dad dig the basement, and then they helped frame in the sides for the cement. Dad and his friends mixed the cement by hand and poured the walls of the basement that summer.
The next summer, dad bought some "Bug" timber, and hired Lawrence Larson to haul it to the mill at Hatch, he gave him an old Model T truck that dad had for the payment.
When the mill burned, in 1937 or 38, his logs wasnt burned, but the owners of the mill took them and rebuilt the sawmill, but never paid dad for them, so dad had to use other means to get the limber to start the home, I never found out what he did for money to get the lumber to frame up the home.
I remember that we worked real hard one summer to get the walls up and a roof on the house, Leroy Porter helped dad layour the rafters and cut them to give the desired pitch to the roof.
With the walls up and the roof on, we were able to work inside the house and finally get the walls and rooms finished enough to move in. I remember the date that we finally moved from the old home to the new house, and I believe that was in the summer of 1941 and Boyd was born in the living room that September.
It took many years to get the new house liveable, and during that time, my bedroom was in the area that the new bathroom is now located, and I remember that there was no eves to the houre, so during the winter, I sometimes would wake up with snow on my bed, but it was covered with a tarp so nothing got wet, and I never had a cold during the time I slept there.
We had bottled fruit and vegs. in the basement but dad didnt make an opening for it, so one day, he cut a hole in the floor of the kitchen, and I was lowered into the basement and handed up the food that they wanted, and it was some time before we cut a hole in the north side of the house and into the basement.
There are lots of memories attached with the home in Hatch, and maybe I will remember more for a later blog.
Keep in touch and I send love and blessings to all..........Lonehawk

The total Classic Country Band

This the complete Classic Country Band, the guy in the white shirt is the new drummer, and we are playing quite a few nights a month. I have never tryed to put a vidio on, so I dont know how to do that type of stuff as yet, but I can learn, given enought time....ha ha .

D, Im proud of you for sticking to your belief and defending your decisions on Prop 8, those who dont see it as a sin, are too dumb to pour sand out of a boot, and dont deserve your time to try to explain to them the sin of it all.

Keep in touch, and I send love and blessings to all..........Lonehawk

True and/or false

Howdy ya-all
To answer a few questions, I will try !
first, I dont know how to put a music dvd on the blog, if you know, please let me know and I will experment with it, as I have several hours of vidio of the Classic Country playing and practacing...
The tale you heard of Dot printing an extra copy of my picture and taking it home and showing it to her daughter, is TRUE. I gave her one, and later I noticed a different one at her home, and ask her what had happened to the picture, as it was a bit different, and she embarassed told me the story...we had a good laugh about it. I guess that was the reason that her daughter ask me if I was going to be her new daddy...
When I told Mom that I had found a girl that I liked very much and that she had a little girl who I had fallen in love with, and that I thought I would ask the mom to marry me, she said " Oh, brother, are you sure that is what you want", I told her that it was the best, and she said, OK, I wont judge her until I meet her, and when she did meet Dot and B, she called me aside, and said, I can see why you want that little girl and her mom, you will make a wonderful family, and I love them all ready...........
Keep in touch and have a wonderful and fun day......sending blessings and love to all......Lonehawk

Country Western Music...Classic country

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262387441380356738" style="FLOAT: left; My first impression was that she was married, but she was a knock out.....dressed in a (bitter seweet color) sweater and skirt, with orange beads around her neck....Not too many men will be able to tell you what his wife was wearing the first time they met....
I gave her the film, and talked about what was in the photos, and then I left to go to class, a couple of days later, I returned to the store to pick up the prints, but the store wasnt open as yet, and as I turned to go away, she was coming accross the road to open up the store.
I picked up the pictures, and talked with her for about an hour, and then ask her for a date, she accepted my invetation to go to the movie...."Travels of Ulisses", which she later told me she was bored silly. I had read the book while I was in the Navy, and wanted to see the movie.
When I took her home, we walked into the Kitchen, and on the counter was some Venison jurkey...I had not had any Jurkey for four years, and ask her if that is what it was, and her answer was yes, and would I like to have some....My reaction was SUR WOULD, and she gave me fore pieces. I took them and would take my knife and shave small slivers off it while I would study.
The next time I dated her, was about a month later, and I had ask her to go to a dance with me, and of course when a man comes to call on a woman, she is never ready, so I sat on the couch. Her little girl (Becky) come over to where I was setting, climed up on the couch, scooted next to me and looking up into my face said " are you going to be my new daddy?" I guess I almost swallowed my toung, but said, " I dont know sweetheart", after that I didnt date dot for about a month.
We finally started dating again, and one night we were paarked on the "Red Hill" and was talking and listening to the radio, when a tune "Love and Marrage" was played and she was singing along, I turned to her and said, "You are one kaniving female arent you ?" and she said "Yes I am and I am going to get what I want!" Just a few months later, we were married....April 6, 1956, and I have not regretted it since.............
Hope you enjoy what happened to the H-------s long long ago..........Keep in touch and sending love and blessings...............Lonehawk

Good looking Sailor

Just going thru some of my old photos, and run accross this one. Now that you have looked at it, you will have to agree that its a good looking Sailor right?

This photo was taken the day that I finished painting the torpedo doors white. I had suggested that we paint the doors white some time before this, and it took a long time before we got the permission to do it. I took real care to do the job very good, as I was tired of cleaning the solid brass doors all the time.

The funny thing is, after I got out of the Navy, and Dorothy and I were married,we went to a movie in Salt Lake and the movie was Operation Pettycoat. We went to the movie a little late, and when I seen the white torpedo doors, I told Dorothy that it looked real familiar, and as the movie progressed, I kept telling her that things sure looked familiar. At the end of the movie, there was a scene of Tony Curtis taking command of a Submarine, and backing away from the dock, and the number on the side of the Submarine was 393, the same submarine that I served on and painted the torpedo doors white. I was sure surprised to see my old home and was happy to tell Dorothy more about where I had lived for three years.

Later on, we were in San Diego and so we went to the Navy docks, and another of my old "boats" was tied up there and doing some mild maintenance as they had just returned from a trip off the coast of Russia, it was a little dirty and stinkey inside, but I was able to talk to one of my old friends, that was still aboard, and was able to take Dorothy inside and show her first hand what it was like. We had only gone about half way, (to the after battery), when she said that she had to get out of the boat, as it was too stinkey, but I hadnt noticed any stink, I guess It smelled like my old home....

Just some of my old memories, hope you was able to understand what the life was like, I LOVED IT.................keep in touch and remember to live, love, laugh and be happy.........Lonehawk

Me and a diving suit

In my past blogs, I have mentioned the diving suit that I was trained in as a diver in the Navy. To better understand what I have been writing, I thought that a picture of the suit and its accompanying connections would be better than a thousand words......

The suit with the diver in it weighs about 450 lbs, and is quite hard to manuver around when on the surface, but once down under the ocean, things lighten up, and even enough to float around quite easly (with caution).

The Helmet is of solid brass, and it has four windows that a person can see what is going on around each side, in front and above. The faceplate(window) unlatches until it is time to make the dive, and then it is secured by the line handlers.

The first thing that is put on is the suit, which is a heavy canvas (ruberized) and then a brest plate is put on over your head and tucked in around the top of the suit, and it has several studs on it that the top plate fits down over the studs and is secured down with nuts. This top plate has the connections that the helmet will screw on when it is time to "suit up".

A long hose and safety line is attached to the helmet, which supplies air to the diver, and is also a safety line in case they have to haul you up from the bottom.

The lead belt weighs about 120 pounds and the shoes are about 25 pounds each.

The leather strap that is between the legs is to "Jock" the diver down, so that the suit dont ride up too high when air is put into the suit.

All, in all, it is quite a simple system but it is now very much outdated, as the new suits are made of rubber and the helmets are plastic with a large face plate and the whole thing weighs about half as much as the old Mark 5 that is in the picture. Hope this will help you understand what is going on during a dive.

What a surprise Andee

Had to read digitalgrannies blog to find out that you passed your CNA, and that is exciting news....Lets see, now I owe you a bunch of money right????.....Will pay up when we come up for thanksgiving, OK?
Today, I took two of the sheep to the slaughter house in Cedar City, and the wind was blowing so hard from the North, that I had to shift into third gear several times to keep going. I have now had reflection on another one that I feel should be recorded so that my family and friends can realize just how close we all come to the end of our lives and yet survive for some reason. After I had completed my Navy schooling for Deep Sea Diving, it is necessary to recertify once each six months, so I was transfered for temporary duty to the USS Coucal a Submarine Rescue ship that has all the latest diving and rescue equipment aboard and whos task it is to go and rescue sailors from any US Submarine that has sunk or damaged, that is in water considered accessable for rescue. We sailed from Pearl Harbor to the Island of Maui and just off the coast of Lahina a small village(at that time) and anchored at a place that was 186 feet deep.My previous deepest dive was to 135 feet and so this was 50 feet deeper than I had ever dove before, but knowing how and when to do things associated with the diving equipment, I was not worried about the dive. The first days diving went on without any problem, and the second was a little more hectic, as some of the line tenders had gone over to the beach and had partied and drank quite a bit of alcohol. The third day and third dive for me was to prove to be a real problem. The sailor whos responsibility was to lower the divers to the bottom of the ocean, had partied the night before and was still drunk as he manned the controls that would hoist the divers up and over the side of the ship and then lower them to the bottom of the ocean at a prescribed speed of not greater than 75 foot per minute. I was assigned as Red diver, and another sailor was assigned Green diver and we were suited up in the Navys diving suit and the Hard Hat (Mark 5 ) helmet. We went thru the necessary rigging and prepration to dive and climed aboard the diving platform to be hoisted up and over the side of the ship and lowered to the bottom. As stated before, the sailor that was running the controls was still drunk and had put the controls in 150 foot per minute speed rather than 75 and lowered us twice as fast as should have been done. When we started down, I knew something was very wrong and I turned my air on full force to counter the on coming pressure. I tried my best to stay ahead of the pressure building, but was not able to do so, and so both of my ear drums were broken. When we reached the bottom, I was able to contact the topside people and tell them what was wrong and then went to the other diver, and seeing that he was not responding, told topside the problem, and was advised to put the other diver on the platform and tie him on so he wouldnt slip off and they brought us up to the surface. The Green diver had both of his ear drums blown outtotal) and I had a L shape tare in my left ear and a pin hole in the right, but both of us had black and blue marks where our bodies were being pushed up in the helmet from the pressure of the outside water......This pressure is 44 pounds per 100 foot of depth, so each square inch of our bodies were subjected to almost 82 pounds per square inch pushing us up into the helmet.I know that without the great training that I recieved, I would have had real serious injuries or had been killed.Sorry to have rattled on so much, but I feel that my family should know of the times that the Lord has watched over me for some reason, and how greatful I am for his guiding hand in these times where I could have been killed so easly.Keep in touch and I send my love and blessings to all................Lonehawk

Navy Deep Sea Diving

I was just setting here reminising about some of the narrow excapes I have had with death, and thought of one time while I was in the Navy.
I had completed the Navy schooling for Deep sea diving, using the Navy Mark 5 hard hat (helmet) and had just completed restocking the USS Queenfish with the latest diving equipment at that time.
We (the ship) was at the Able docks in Pearl Harbor and was doing some minor repairs and upkeep. One of our radio operators was taking a piece of Stainless steel over to the shop to have it welded and some other repairs done on it when he lost control and it went over the side and sank.
The depth of the water at that point was about 90 feet and they ask me if I could retrieve it ???
I told them that the water was pretty deep, but If I could locate it quickly, I would be able to get a line on it and bring it up.
I got Cliff Hoxsey ( my little brother) to tend my lines as I went down, and everything was going great until I got to the bottom. I had located the piece of stainless steel, and was just about to hook up the line to it, when I didnt have any air. I pulled on the rope three times to signal that I was coming up fast, and then I dropped my weight belt and did an assent, this is going to the top as soon as I could get there without any air supply from top side. I had what is known as residual air that expands in your lungs as you come from the deep areas to a lesser pressure and was able to get to the surface in pretty good shape.
When we went looking for the reason that I had run out of air, we found that a dock worker was removing my air connection from the air bank, with a big red tag saying "DO NOT REOVE, DIVER DOWN" but I guess that he couldnt or didnt read the tag and wanted some air. When I come up to him (dripping wet) and said "Hey feller, you almost killed me", he turned about as white as any Hawaiian could turn. After that , we stationed a person at the air manifold and I went back down and hooked up to the stainless steel plate and brought it up.
If it hadnt have been for the great training that I had in the diving school, I could have been easyl killed.........Im greatful for my life and what it has been and the great family that I have, and I want all who reads this to know how much I love my family...........Lonehawk......Garn

L to R top to bottom: Tyler Nelson, Jason Branham, Andee Belyea, Randi Nelson, Bridger Belyea, Jessie Branham Price, Kristi Dawn Branham, Ciera Belyea, Tina Branham Tubbs.

We had this picture taken in Bountiful on Aug. 28 the day of Grandma Bradshaws 100 th birthday.
